Recount scheduled in Stutsman County Commission race

Heitkamp Blunders Multiply

The first debate with Kevin Cramer and Heidi Heitkamp was a good one. I thought Kevin looked in control and comfortable while Heidi looked extremely stressed. It was a bad week for Heidi with her newspaper ad re-victimizing sexual assault survivors. This will probably go down as one of the biggest campaign blunders in the history of North Dakota. But, thats another story. One discussion that caught my attention was when Kevin highlighted the ad Heidi is currently running where she claims "he raised his own salary." He was careful to use these words exactly because its this nuance that shows her falsehood. There can be no doubt that Heidi knows this to be false. She was the state tax commissioner and the attorney general, she knows the legislature sets salaries and that state employees cannot "give themselves raises." I know for a fact that is not true, because as a legislator I have voted for those pay raises. In the debate, Heitkamp quickly pivoted away and never really answered Cramer's question of why she continues to run the ad even though she must know its false. All of this is behavior unbecoming of a U.S. Senator and we expect more integrity from our elected leaders.
