Painting technique that reveals inner life is the focus of a new exhibit at the Jamestown Art Center.

"Hooshang Khorasani: Energy and Flow," opens Thursday and runs through Sept. 15. The paintings include Khorasani's favorite subjects, flowers and horses, which capture a subtle inner energy through layering of texture and color with strong brushwork, said Sally Jeppson, gallery manager.

"When I was considering this exhibition I was drawn to the artist's work because of its vibrant color and large scale with big paintings," Jeppson said. "I am a lover of flowers and horses and felt that this exhibition, one that combines both subjects, would be popular to many people."

The equine paintings are a study of running horses with everything working to evoke movement, she said. The colors add to the energy, she said.

"I paint in layers, adding texture, but it's as if the paint itself takes part in the creative process," Khorasani said in his artist's statement. "Indeed, the common theme for all my works is energy — energy in nature and the world around me, in moving colors that show power, in the inner life of my subjects. I seek to unveil the mysteries and beauties of the universe."

Khorasani is a contemporary artist with studios in Ruston, La., and Orange County, Calif. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and has been a full-time artist in the U.S. and Spain since 1984, after also working a book illustrator and graphic designer.

The exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

Inspired by Khorasani's floral paintings there will be lunch program featuring the art of flower arranging with John Zvirovski at noon on Aug. 22. Guests are invited to bring their own lunch or purchase one for $5 by calling 251-2496 to RSVP by Aug. 20.

The Arts Center's Gallery is located at 115 2nd St. SW, Jamestown, and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. Visit jamestownarts.com. Find out more about Khorsani at hooshangstudio.com.
